Under the pastorship of Msgr. Benjamin Bacierra, the Cathedral Parish "lost" a territory when a new parish was created,
the Holy Rosary Parish. The new parish now consists of six barangays of the Municipality of Palo (Barangay Pawing and
Barangay Baras among them) and one sitio. This also includes the entire Government Center. The first appointed parish
priest is (still incumbent as of this writing) Father Ronnie Sotico Mora, himself a native of Palo.

The seventh bishop/third archbishop of Palo was installed amidst colorful rites and ceremonies. Archbishop Jose Palma,
erstwhile Bishop of Calbayog, was received at the San Juanico Bridge by Auxiliary Bishop Isabelo Abarquez, and at the
cathedral by the cathedral Rector, Msgr. Benjamin Bacierra. He was officially installed by his predecessor Archbishop
Pedro Dean. Among the honored guests during the eventful occasion were two Filipino Princes of the Church: Gaudencio
Cardinal Rosales, Archbishop of Manila, and Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Archbishop of Cebu. The suffragan bishops of the
Metropolitan Province were also on hand to welcome the new Metropolitan Archbishop: Bishop Leonardo Medroso of Borongan,
Bishop Filomeno Bactol of Naval and Bishop Emmanuel Trance of Catarman. Bishops from other dioceses were likewise present.

On this Maundy Thursday of the Holy Week 2008 and during the Mass of Chrism held at the cathedral, a decree of Archbishop Jose
Palma was read by the Archdiocesan Chancellor Rev. Father Elmo Borgueta declaring the period from February 14, 2008 through
February 14, 2009 as a special Jubilee Year for the Archdiocese of Palo. This is in commemoration of the 25th year of Palo as
an archdiocese. Later the Archbishop declared the Metropolitan Cathedral as one the eight sites where the faithful may make their
pilgrimage and, after fulfilling the requirements, obtain the jubilee indulgence during this period.

The Cathedral played host to the Directors of Vocations National Convention. About 300 participants, all directors and directresses
of vocations attended the five-day affair. The assembly was held at the parish pastoral center.
During the welcome dinner on April 21, it was officially announced that the pastoral center would from henceforth be called the Archbishop
Cipriano V. Urgel Pastoral Center, or ARCIVU Center for short, in memory of the late Archbishop Cipriano Urgel, the fifth bishop of Palo
and its first archbishop. The 23rd anniversary of his death was commemorated the next day, April 22.
The place where the pastoral center stands was a familiar area for the late archbishop. He was a former school director of what used to be
the Leyte Central Academy (later St. Mary's Academy of Palo), located nearby. He also discharged his duties as Chancellor and Vicar General
before he was appointed Bishop of Calbayog. When he became the fifth bishop of Palo, the area was converted into a Chancery where he held office.
